A new show on Prime Video titled Off Campus has become a hit nationwide. The story follows Hannah Wells, a smart, hardworking, musically inclined “lover girl,” who meets Garrett Graham, a hockey player whose name holds weight. Garrett is noncommittal and a reckless boy in desperate need of improving his grades.
Hannah, who is also in need of help with a dating issue, agrees to a deal with Garrett to help each other in what they know best. The trope of the story is mainly fake dating, while also picking up on other drama along the way.- Friendship and love also play a big role in the plot. The hockey team itself acts as its own family filled with love, while also welcoming Hannah and her best friend Allie.
Eighth grade student Ella Wint stated, “I loved the dynamic between Hannah and Allie. Their friendship is full of love.”
While the show mainly focuses on Garrett and Hannah, other secrets begin to spill as additional storylines unfold. Some truths create underlying tension on the hockey team, while others lead to conflicts that no one wants. Eighth grade student Jocelyn Fernandez said, “I love the tension, especially the way they look at each other.” Fernandez also added, “My favorite couple is definitely Dean and Allie.”
Since the Prime Video show is based on books by Elle Kennedy, the big question is whether viewers will read the books. Seventh grade student Maya Kahana stated, “Yes, I would read the books,” and also named Dean and Allie as her favorite couple, like many others. As season two begins filming, more people have shared predictions about what will happen next for these fictional characters. Seventh grader Sabrina Boccagina said, “Dean and Allie are going to be in season two.”
While it has been confirmed that Dean and Allie will be a main focus of season two, other stories will begin to form around them, creating even more microtropes along the way. Although the books are not exactly in order, readers will begin to see connections to another trope involving a new character named Grace and current hockey team player John Logan.
