Many students at Edison Intermediate School (EIS) enjoy watching the student versus teacher basketball game that happens traditionally before winter break. Students say that they enjoy watching it for numerous reasons such as: the athleticism in the game, a break from schoolwork, a fun way to end before holiday break, and lastly how it brings the school together. They say that playing or watching the game can bring people together and that people who don’t normally talk outside of school can help one another either by playing the game or making signs to cheer the students that are playing on. The chemistry between the teamwork that needs to happen for everyone to be in sync is also important.
Gabe, a sixth grader at EIS said, “It’s really fun, and I like watching the chemistry in the game and in the players. Also I like that we have these games so we can have good school spirit.”
He explained that the school games can show a connection between people and can bring their relationship closer together because of the need to be in sync when playing.
Seventh grader Nico Destofano exclaimed, “I love watching the basketball games. I also like how the school is one big team because we are all rooting for the students.”
Another seventh grader, Benji Sathananthan, said, “The game is really fun, and it is a great way to end before holiday break. Also playing together can increase spirits. I love watching the students hit the teachers’ ankles!”
In addition, eighth grade Language Arts and Journalism teacher Mrs. Erin Meade declared, “I really like the music and the energy at the student teacher basketball game. Everyone is very excited to participate, and I never really know who is going to win.”
Mrs. Meade also added that she enjoys seeing teachers and staff in a different light. “I usually see Mr. Scozarro conducting musicians, and Mr. Cusumano at the library. Seeing them play basketball is very entertaining because I always think of them as just teachers, not athletes.”
Mr. Todd Custer, Physical Education and Health teacher at EIS explained, “I like having the basketball game before winter break because it brings the school together, and it’s a fun way to end they day before the holidays.”
Mr. Custer says the tradition of the basketball game has been going on for over 30 years. This year, the teacher team beat the student teams keeping the tradition of the adults winning this annual event.
