As the holidays grow closer, people’s excitement increases. Social media has a significant impact on many aspects of teenagers’ lives. Many students have begun creating their lists and adding wishes. However, where are they getting their ideas for presents for teenagers?
The Giftful app is being increasingly used throughout Edison Intermediate School (EIS). Giftful is an online wishlist. People can add links to a wishlist that other people can view. Giftful have become even more popular due to the upcoming holidays. EIS eighth grader Josephine Serapiglia uses Giftful for multiple purposes. “I do have Giftful. I downloaded it because it’s easier to make a list. I also like seeing other people’s lists.”
“Yes, I have Giftful. I have it because it’s easier to show your gifts to relatives, my friends introduced it to me, and a lot of girls have it in our schools,” EIS eighth grader Alexis Ruzika stated.
According to Forbes, social media is a hub for trend starting, especially during the holidays. As teens search for ideas of what to wish for, these platforms are their source. “Social media has become a powerhouse in shaping shopping trends, especially among younger consumers. Platforms like Instagram, Pinterest, and TikTok are not just spaces for sharing and connecting but have transformed into influential trendsetters and shopping portals. The visual nature of these platforms makes them ideal for showcasing the latest trends in fashion, home decor, gadgets, and more, directly influencing consumer choices”(Kate Hardcastle). Because social media has a strong impact on people, it has influenced many to desire certain items for the holidays that they may not have wanted before.
Social media is mostly used for finding information on what is trending. With new brands, shops, and food places being shared on these platforms, teens want to try them out. Seventh grader Maddox Casteluccio uses social media and what is popular to give him ideas of what he wants for the holidays. “I came across a set of golf clubs on Instagram and added them to my list,” stated seventh grader Quinn Defoe.
“I saw an e-bike on TikTok and asked my parents for it,” added Maddox Casteluccio.
According to Bright Age, social media has a large impact on teens, especially during the holidays.“Social media is no longer just a platform to stay in touch with family and friends or post vacation photos; it’s an essential part of the shopping journey. According to Sprout Social, 89% of consumers say brand social media impacts their holiday shopping decisions. Most consumers in today’s digital age discover products through social media, making it a powerful tool for holiday marketing campaigns. Plan your holiday marketing campaigns early to get ahead of the competition”(Bright Age).
