This year, the sixth and seventh graders at Edison Intermediate School (EIS) have a study hall twice a week. It is shown that study halls can help with stress levels by providing time to get work done and be able to ask their teachers questions. According to Aditya Narayan, “Study halls provide a crucial break for students amidst demanding schedules, offering them a chance to recharge and manage their academic responsibilities.”
Teachers at EIS find study hall very valuable for the students because it gives the students time for their homework. With study hall, you have more time to get work done during school hours instead of outside of school. Edison Intermediate School 21st Century Communications and Drama teacher Mr. Michael Altmann stated, “If used properly it’s amazing, everyone should have a study hall.”
Most students are enjoying the study hall at EIS. It helps students learn time management and organization. Study hall provides opportunities for students to get their work done and future assignments accomplished. It allows teachers to give their middle schoolers more work so their students can understand better what they are learning in class. Sixth grader at EIS, Mackenzie Leffler explained,“It gives me time to do my homework before I get home.”
Similar to Mackenzie, Toka Geladze, a seventh grader at EIS stated, “I love it because I have no homework left to do at home and I can listen to music.”
This is one of the main reasons why students love study hall so much. Students have free time when they get home from school. They don’t have to worry about completing all of their assignments because they get it done in study hall.
Sixth and seventh grade music teacher Mr. Stephen Markowski explained, “Yes, I think it is built into the day wonderfully. I have gotten used to it, but study hall presents challenges. It is harder to teach not having the same students in my elective classes on some days.”
Although sixth and seventh graders have a study hall, eighth graders do not. Eighth grader Alex Heuck at (EIS) said, “I think for high school we need to learn to manage our time.”
Physical Education teacher Mrs. Christine Cabrales also believes that study hall is beneficial to both students and faculty. She claimed that she usually doesn’t have quiet time during the day to plan her Health class lessons. “I think study hall is great because the students have calm time to do work instead of having to complete it at home. I also have time to sit and complete lessons in a mellow environment, and I really appreciate the study time.”
