Have you ever been inside on a sunny day stuck doing hours and hours of homework? Kids stress over homework on the daily. “I wanna go outside,” well that’s too bad because you have piles and piles of homework to do after ALL the work you just did in school and before you know it it’s 12pm! This is what at just the young age of 13 year olds have to go through. Although some homework is beneficial to some students and their learning abilities, to others it causes stress, takes time away from activities, and reduces sleep for kids and teens leading to depression.
To start off, students barely get any sleep nowadays. Recent studies said, “ Homework may affect a child’s sleep in three ways. First, the time it takes to finish an assignment may infringe on time that should be used for sleeping. Second, work done too close to bedtime may leave a child too stimulated to fall asleep easily. Finally, if homework is done on or near a child’s bed, the child may associate that area with working or stress and not be able to fall asleep easily” (Gruber). This proves that homework can have many effects to make kids sleep deprived. As a result you can see excessive homework assigned by teachers often leads to sleep deprivation for children.
Secondly, homework can bring a lot of stress on kids then people think a study has shown, “In 2013, research conducted at Stanford University found that students in high-achieving communities who spend too much time on homework experience more stress ” (Levy). Since people who are successful in school have so much homework to keep that standard, a lot of homework comes along with that. As a result the kid’s whole life is trying to stay into the high achieving class by doing as much homework as the school asks him to do which causes stress levels to increase rapidly and out of control.
Lastly, homework can take away time from your everyday activities and life. “Excessive homework takes time away from activities that boost students’ social-emotional development, such as extracurricular activities, hobbies and socializing” (Lathan). Since homework really took a place in our life we try to find time for other activities. With homework in the way it’s hard to do everything that you want to do. As a result you will have less experience because you had too much homework when it’s 90 degrees outside.
Although homework causes a lot of problems and interferes with activities. studies have shown that it’s very beneficial to assign students reading for homework. Reading has proven to have many beneficial effects. “ Reading is a great way for your students to train their brains without completing a full blown assignment. You can pick a class book if you’re reading something together, get them to read more of a book they’re already reading or do a quick class visit to the school library.” (Morris). Therefore there are many other options for teachers to assign homework that are more beneficial for students. This would benefit teachers because they would have to grade less homework and for students because they would be less stressed, sleep better and have more time to go outside.
All in all, homework is an obstacle that us students have to overcome in our already busy lives that we are living. Homework impacts students’ sleep, activities, and stress leading to depression and even worse.

I can see your point of view here. Too much homework definitely eats into extracurricular activities, and time with friends and families. I wonder if the new block scheduling they are proposing for the high school would help alleviate this issue. One of the administrators’ arguments is that longer classes will allow for more in depth learning, and hopefully cut down on the learning and homework that currently has to be done at home due to short class periods. Keep up the good work Jack and Evan!
