Airpods are a very controversial topic for students and teachers since they could be good or bad. Edison Intermediate School (EIS) students agree that airpods should be allowed and benefit them while working. While others believe they should be banned in schools.
EIS eighth grader Audrianna Nastasi says “It helps me and other students focus and motivates us.” This shows how they can help some students when they find noise beneficial while working and they can motivate them to stay focused and keep on track at all times during the school day or school work.
Airpods also help brighten student’s moods while doing their work and make it more enjoyable. EIS sixth-grade student Dilan Datwani states“When I put on music it makes me feel happy.” This proves that while school work can be dreadful and stressful, listening to music can make you feel stress-free while doing your work and ease your mind.
Another example that supports this side of the claim is what an EIS sixth-grader Anabelle Grave believes “Yes it helps me when focusing and if you do not have space for headphones they are small and don’t take up space.” This shows how this side of the claim can have many pros, including being more compact. Students are often dealing with heavy backpacks and back pain from carrying so many things around, airpods could change this because they do not take up space and are not heavy.
While on the other side of the claim, EIS Writing Specialist Mr. Rich Mcnanna believes “Even though this is an unpopular option. No, because we aren’t allowed to have phones, it can be a distraction and make the sneaking of phones more intended.” This can illustrate how not only might they be a distraction but they can encourage the use of phones which is prohibited in schools.
Another example that supports this side of the claim is EIS seventh grader Charlotte Katz believes “No, because it can be a distraction for you and the people around you while you listen to music“ This can show from a student’s perspective how Charlotte might find it distracting when seeing others have in air pods or listen to music while she is trying to work.
Lastly, another example was given by Language Arts Teacher Mrs. Susan Moore: “Personally, I think it can help many students but can be a safety issue, and personally, for me, it’s harder for school-type tasks.”
Mrs. Moore was very neutral to this topic because she explains that it could help people but it could be a safety issue. For example, if there were to be a lockdown drill and a student was in the hallway or bathroom and didn’t hear the loudspeaker cause they had Air pods in, it could lead to bigger issues if it weren’t a drill.

This is a great discussion topic and the authors of this article have done an excellent job in balancing perspectives. Like all technology, there is a time a place for everything. We need to ensure we are paying attention in class and not disrupting others. But having dedicated time to be productive while also listening to some tunes no doubt helps all of us through our busy days – as I often do as well. Sounds like you’re all on the right path to a creative solution for all. Well-done!
