Are you ever in class stressing about being able to finish your homework at home or study for a test? Well If you have a 15 minute break in between an elective class you may be able to finish that stuff and relieve yourself.
Students say that this “brain break” is very beneficial because you can get into the mindset for your next class. Say you were in art and are going to math. Art is not as serious as math. This break would give you time to get ready for your next class. Another reason why these breaks are beneficial is because if there is a test the next period after their elective they may be stressed. This break would be a good time for them to study or go over the work that will be on the test. Seventh grade student Fiona O’connor says “Sometimes I have outside circulars after school and don’t have the time to finish homework outside of school. I like this break because it would give me time to finish my work.”
Something that you could do during the break is go to your locker if you need to get your binders or lunch for the next class. This would give you a lot of time so you’re not rushing. You can also go to the bathroom because most teachers do not like it when you go to the bathroom in the middle of their class because it can be disrespectful. Seventh and Eighth grade science teacher Tamara Zuckerman says “I do not like when students need to go to the bathroom every day but I do understand if they need a little break.”Teachers also say that this is beneficial but you need to be productive during that time. Teachers also think that we should turn this in to a study hall for students to do their work. Lastly, students need time to get to their next classes because since they will be in an elective some students have to go across the school to get to their next period.
Things that can be negative about this idea is that it may lengthen the school day since we would be adding an extra 15 minutes. Seventh and Eighth grade science teacher Tamara Zuckerman states “ 15 minutes may be a lot of time but in my 9th period class since they have lunch and then an elective I give them an extra 2 minutes including the passing time to go to the bathroom or get ready for class.” Another reason is that some students are not trusted enough to be doing something productive during this time. Instead they would possibly go on their phone or just sit there and distract their classmates. This could cause students to be easily distracted or influenced to not do their work or study. Teachers also gave the idea of putting an extra minute for bathroom breaks during passing periods since 15 minutes is a long time.
Although this break has some negative effects it could still be beneficial in many different ways.
